KIM’S EPIC STRANGER THINGS HALLOWEEN PARTY + HIP HOP WITH MY DAD + Y AT CITY WAY + SNICKERDOODLE CUPCAKES

Every year my friend Kim throws an epic Halloween themed party to celebrate her birthday (this year was the big 3-0). The theme this year was Stranger Things and I was told to show up as Nancy. After a Google Image search, I quickly realized that dressing the part was going to be extremely easy – a collared shirt and cardigan were Nancy’s go-to 1980’s staples. Kim nailed the part of Barb and her costume is so good that a national morning news show will be featuring ‘Barb’ on the air next week. Stay tuned for more details on my famous and fabulous friend.

In full disclosure, I did not finish season one of Stranger Things. However, I did watch it long enough to know about Barb’s demise and that Nancy was a horrible friend. Last year I brought pumpkin beer brownies  and I did not win the prestigious Boner Award. The award is a skeleton head and is similar to an Emmy or Oscar in grandeur.

I redeemed myself this year and made snickerdoodle cupcakes with a maple buttercream frosting, topped with a mini Eggo waffle. I made a few with a plain buttercream and then topped it with M&M’s and a drizzle of chocolate sauce to represent the iconic Christmas lights in the show, but I think the Eggos were the way to go.

You can find the snickerdoodle cupcake recipe here. The only difference is that I added a few tablespoons of maple syrup to the buttercream frosting for these. The half and half ratio of both all-purpose flour and cake flour makes these cupcakes especially good. Also, I re-read ‘the 28 things to tell my 20 year self’ included in the original post and I agree with all of them as I approach 30 next month.

HIP HOP AT THE Y

I finally became a member of the YMCA at City Way. It is less than a mile from my condo and a quick walk from work in Fountain Square. I have no idea what took me so long. I’ll continue Pilates at Invoke at least once a week, but in an effort to save a little money and mix up my routine, the Y is a no brainer. After a tour around the facilities, I somehow convinced my Dad to stay for a hip hop cardio class. Hilarity ensued and it was the funniest, sweatiest hour ever. My Dad killed it on “Turn Down for What” and it was just the right amount of booty shaking.

Our instructor, Martina, has some serious moves and she brought my Dad up to the front of the class at the end for some final embarrassment. He handled it like a pro and I was so proud of him. If I have learned anything as I get older, it’s to be yourself with wild abandonment. I’d rather be me and have a good time than play it safe and never have experienced shaking it with my dad in a classroom full of hip hop enthusiasts. If you’re interested, Martina teaches every Saturday at 11:45am and I plan to be a repeat participant.

Also, I got lucky and signed up for a membership before I turn 30 on Thanksgiving – the price goes up substantially and I locked in the 30 and under price by signing up this weekend.
