RAINMAKERS + THINGS THAT MADE ME HAPPY + WATERMELON, MINT, FETA SALAD

This week I went to Rainmakers‘ young professionals event at 1001 Bar in Broad Ripple. The event is held once a month and features a speaker to provide interesting insight into ways to get involved in the community, how to network, business advice, and general positivity.

I did a little googling prior to the event and according to their website, their purpose is “To inspire people to their true potential doing what they love.” Sign me up. These are my kind of people! The atmosphere was laidback and welcoming. I was immediately greeted by a board member, given a name tag, and asked to place a sticker of my choosing on the nametag for an activity later. I found my Nemo sticker and got a drink.

To my surprise, one of my best friends from my intern days at the Department of Agriculture just happened to be there and it was great to catch up with him. I plan to be a regular attendee. A woman came up to me later after we had gone around the circle and said what we were passionate about. She was a big fan of Dig IN and could relate to my passion for food. Don’t worry – I said literacy first and then added food as a bonus since most of the group mentioned more serious issues as their passion.

This month’s speaker was State Representative and Democratic Lt. Governor candidate Christina Hale. Regardless of politics, there’s no way you will not instantly like her. She is a strong, confident woman that fights for what is right. I have a lot of respect for her and she has accomplished so much since her first election in 2012.

She’s also one of the most stylish people at the Statehouse and after working there for a few years, I can say that the Statehouse can always benefit from a little more style. Representative Hale also spoke to Junior League last year, so it is evident that she makes time to educate people, especially young people, about the issues in Indiana. Her campaign signs said, ‘Hale, yes!,’ so she’s also got a sense of humor.

THINGS THAT MADE ME HAPPY THIS WEEK

I realize the following will be a whole lot of random, but I am ok with that! I am one of those people that has an endless amount of useless facts, tips, and stories, which I then  connect to everyday conversation. It’s both a skill and a burden. So here it goes, in no particular order of happiness.

  • The hummus at Chilly Water. Spicy, feta amazingness. Hat tip to the beer festival date for this discovery.

  • The Vineyard Vines whale, aka my new, large pink BFF. The new Keystone store is now open and it instantly brought me back to my DC days of walking to the store in Georgetown and looking at the plethora of items I couldn’t afford. I have quite a bit of their stuff, but it has all been purchased online, heavily on sale, or from my loving and way too generous preppy mother. I bought a girls’ size 14 oxford for $50 and called it a success.

  • The downtown farmer’s market at City Market. This is not a new find, but it does make me extremely happy if I can get away from my desk to make the jaunt over on Wednesday afternoons. I may or may not have eaten all of those blackberries on my walk, which I also did at Portobello Market in London one summer.
  • A really creative ad to encourage people to be organ donors. I always sign up to be an organ donor when I go to the BMV and it is great to see a campaign bringing awareness to why it is so important. You can watch the ad here.
  • Overheard in LA: If you’re on Instagram and not familiar with this account, follow it now. I found the post below and I am a little worried that someone in LA has been talking about me. Get ready for hilarious overheard conversations, usually at the Brentwood Whole Foods. You’re welcome.

WATERMELON, MINT, FETA SALAD

Combine all of the above (watermelon, mint, and feta) and be ready to be amazed. It sounds like a weird combination, but trust me. You can also add red onion or a bit of balsamic glaze.
