BOURBON PUMPKIN PIE + GARDEN TABLE + WHITE ELEPHANTS + BOWS

Today I went to support my PR BFF and partner in crime, Ali, at her PR firm’s (Borshoff) white elephant charity event. The Unofficially Official, World’s Largest White Elephant Gift Exchange encouraged Hoosiers to bring a wrapped present in good condition to Scotty’s Brewhouse downtown. It was also an opportunity to donate household items to Goodwill. You could even re-gift your gift at the event or donate it as well. It may have rained on our elephant gift exchange parade, but it didn’t dampen our spirits. Ali had some sweet dance moves on the Scotty’s stage and everyone seemed to have a great time. I wrapped up a $5 movie I had never watched (sorry, Jodie Foster) and I liked the solar dancing flowers that I was gifted!

After getting in the holiday spirit, I headed over to Garden Table in Broadripple. It has been on my list for awhile and I really liked it! I loved the blackboards, the Indiana map that listed all of their Indiana food vendors (Tinker Coffee Co, Amelia’s Bakery, and Smoking Goose), the abundance of mason jars, and the menu loaded with fresh ingredients. I think the next time I will go for breakfast because the breakfast menu looks amazing.

For lunch I knew I wanted to get a sandwich and was torn between the BMT (bacon, mozzarella, tomato) and the lemon chicken open faced sandwich. The cashier recommended the lemon chicken, so I went for it. It was good – rotisserie chicken served on toasted sourdough bread with roasted red peppers and feta, topped with a little arugula. It was served with a side salad (you can also choose fruit as your side) and I added an iced tea. The total was $14. I may re-create this at home the next time I have leftover rotisserie chicken and I have some lemon olive oil from Trader Joe’s. The lemon was subtle and the bread was a little soggy – I would have toasted it a little longer.

The restaurant vibe reminded me of a place that I would go with the hipster boyfriend that I do not have. Very earthy and the woman next to me was distraught that they did not have stevia for her green tea. There was a couple on my other side, in matching plaid. I will definitely go back, but next time with friends and for brunch.

After lunch, I was really bad. Somehow I ended up at Kate Spade to try on a dress I was convinced they would not have in my size. Even at $200 off, I couldn’t justify it, but tis the season to treat myself to something I will be coveting for years to come. I rarely encourage frivolous splurges, but I know myself very well and a bow like that does not come along often. Bury me in this dress, that is how much I love it. To my surprise, they had my size (thanks a lot, Kate) and I was in it before you could say, ‘Bad, Libby!’ I joked to friends that there will be an exciting series of blog posts titled ‘All the ways to eat tuna’ in the next few weeks as I punish myself for splurging.

I have no where to wear this beautiful frock, but in the meantime I can admire it in my closet and look forward to celebrating something someday wearing a dress that is quintessential Libby. So, treat yourself! If it makes you feel good, it will likely make others feel good. How can you not smile with a giant bow on your back and besides, I cannot wait to watch Winnie try to eat it while I am wearing it.

For reference, I am wearing a 2 and it works! I can comfortably eat my way through the holidays. Business in the front, party in the back.

Onto the boozy pumpkin pie! I realized that today, on December 16th, I have yet to have pumpkin pie! I missed out when I was in London traveling over Thanksgiving, so I thought why the heck not? I found this recipe from Gimme Some Oven (get it, oven?) with bourbon in it and it was a done deal. Bourbon pumpkin pie was happening in December.

I am happy to report it was a hit. I gave Winnie a sniff of the bottle because I am a good mom like that, and he seemed to like it! I do recommend making the crust – it is not that hard and Rome was not built in a day, friends, so you can wait one hour while it chills. Trust me, you can do it! I do think you can go store bought and top it with Redi-Whip.

BOURBON PUMPKIN PIE

Recipe Gimme Some Oven

  • 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 can (15 ounces) pumpkin puree
  • 1 can (12 ounces) evaporated milk
  • 2 tablespoons bourbon (and maybe a little extra for yourself)
  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust 

Pie Crust

  • 1 1/4 cups flour
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 stick cold unsalted butter, cut into small squares
  • 4 tbsps cold water

For the dough:

Pulse together flour, sugar and salt in a food processor until combined. Sprinkle in half of the cubed butter, and pulse in 2-second intervals, 2-3 times, or until incorporated. Add remaining butter and pulse until incorporated. Dough will be in little clumps.

Use your hands to pack the dough into a ball, like you’re packing a snowball, then carefully pat the dough into a 1/2-inch thick round disk. Wrap the dough tightly in plastic wrap, then refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or up to 3 days, until ready to use.

For the filling:

Preheat oven to 425° F

Whisk together sugar and pumpkin spice in a small bowl and set aside.

In a large bowl, whisk the eggs and the pumpkin until combined.  Whisk in the sugar-spice mixture until combined.  Then gradually stir in the evaporated milk and bourbon until combined.  Pour the mixture into the unbaked pie shell.

Bake for 15 minutes. Then reduce temperature to 350° F, and bake for an additional 40 to 50 minutes or until toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Cool on wire rack for 2 hours, then refrigerate until ready to serve
