I am a huge fan of Bru Burger. Not only is it within walking distance from my condo, but the staff is friendly, they remember my name (and my pup), and the food is amazing. The menu is simple and to the point, with a lot of creativity and just the right amount of choices. I always find large menus questionable – it is better to have a one pager with really well executed dishes. As you can tell from the name, it is a burger place, but I will take a moment to plug their triple dip board (goat cheese, hummus, and guac with pita) and their Siracha Caesar salad (get a beer because your mouth will be on fire). Now, back to the burgers. I almost always get the provencal, which I have blogged about here, but on a recent Bru visit, I decided to get outside my burger comfort box. I went with the Farmstead and it was so good! Shaved Brussel sprouts, prosciutto, apple, golden raisins, and feta cheese on top of a perfectly cooked medium rare burger. YUM times a million. The sweet of the apple/raisin combo and the salty feta make this a winner.
I recreated this at home and made a turkey burger instead since I meet my beef quota through my weekly Bru visits and I thought the sprouts, raisins, and feta were a nice complement to turkey. I also sliced up some sweet potatoes, drizzled them with evoo, and a dash of cinnamon and roasted them in the oven. For the burger, cook it how you like it. Nothing fancy – this is not the time or place to add crazy mix-ins to the meat. You can buy Brussel sprouts shaved (aka shredded) in the grocery store or you can just give them a rough chop. I steamed them in a little water for about two minutes in the microwave so they would be tender. Next, mix a little chopped granny smith apple chunks with some golden raisins and toss with lemon juice. I placed the apple, raisins, and brussel sprouts in a small saucepan with a little butter to heat the topping. Assemble your burger – Brussel sprouts, prosciutto, apple/raisin mixture, and a generous portion of feta cheese on top! I also made this bunless since I wanted to save room for the fries, so I sauteed some spinach for the base and placed the burger on top. I also sauteed some red onion slices in balsamic while I had the pan hot. I mixed a little garlic in some mayo for the garlic aioli and voila, you have the Farmstead burger!
This was my first real week in the office of my new job. While I have technically been an employee for ten weeks, nine of those weeks were spent as a contractor for one of our clients. It was an embedded employee gig on an interim basis and I remained as their public affairs director until they found a replacement. I am SO happy to be back and love all of the people I work with. It’s a creative, fun work environment and I am blessed to be a member of the team. A friend posted this quote recently and it made me think of my current job:

I love this quote for lots of reasons, but it also reminds me that the friends I have made in past jobs and the lessons and skills I learned along the way, will always be with me. Not a day goes by that one of my experiences in either government or my last PR job, doesn’t come in handy. This is what makes you a valuable employee – your past experiences and also the willingness to approach every project full speed ahead. My new job also takes the prize in the snack category. It’s like they knew all about me. Popcorn, pistachios, cheese puffs, fruit, breakfast on Fridays, Donut Thursdays, and on and on.
My other favorite perk is the dogs. Hank lives in the creative department on the main floor and Matt Damon occasionally visits. I am waiting for Winston to get older and also learn some manners….haha.
